Blato (The island of Korcula)
Blato is a spot in the inland of the Korcula Island. It is four kilometers far off from see, and seven kilometers away from Vela Luka. There are still sounds of swords and brave knights echoing in the streets of Blato – the scene from the knights' game «Kumpanija» can always impress visitors. Blato will satisfy all gurman tastes, it will dazzle you with its gastronomy and top quality wine.

The special thing about Blato is certainly the alley of teil trees stretching from the one side of the place to the other and counting exactly 117 hundred year old teil trees, adding thus to the unique feeling in June when teils are blooming.

Blato is a place full of specificities. It is located in the inland of the island, but it still has 40 kilometers of the beautiful coast on the northern and southern side of the island. Such a position brought to Blato over the years safety from pirate attacks. The army called «Kumpanija» was developed to defend the settlement , and over the centuries it became part of the folklore and a very attractive knights' fencing dance. During the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century Blato experienced its biggets prosperity, thus not without a reason this era is called «the golden era of Blato».



The common people of Blato hold on to their tradition and culture through its 15 cultural societies and associations.

The most apparent is the knightly company «Kumpanija» (translates as Companions). The knightly entertainment called «kumpanija» is one of the most attractive and conspicuous ways of respecting and preserving the tradition of Blato. It is held on April 28th - St Vincenzo day. The remains of St Vincenzo had been moved to Blato two centuries ago, with the accession of Pope Pio the 6th.

Kumpanija is a knightly game with a lot of noise between two parade armies prepared to defend their own - it was one of the tasksof those knights many centuries ago, when they were defending their town.
